A Win-Win Experience with PupsEtc.com!

What a joy it is to work with Cathy at PupsEtc.com!  The passion she puts into her beautiful creations is only exceeded by her generosity to the Rescue groups she works with.  Your dogs will love their new furnishings, and you will feel great about having your purchases help such a wonderful cause – a true Win-Win situation!

Thank you for helping to support our efforts to fund the critical treatment needed for rescued Cairns who have tested heartworm positive, and please help spread the word about the importance of prevention.

Please follow this link to the American Heartworm Society website to learn more about this awful disease, including prevention, and to see graphic photos of adult heartworms in a dog’s heart.

An average of six to eight times each year, Col. Potter rescues a heartworm positive Cairn, giving them the chance to overcome this dreadful condition and live a happy, healthy life.  The prescribed treatment program runs an average cost of $1,000, and is not for the faint of heart, requiring a dedicated Volunteer to be there for a three or four month duration, managing every aspect of every day for the dog undergoing treatment.

PupsEtc is pleased to offer Col. Potter a special Heartwarming Tails fundraiser to help offset the cost of our current stable of four Foster Cairns undergoing this expensive heartworm treatment.  Beginning Saturday, October 19th through Friday, November 1st, a full 20% of all proceeds taken in by PupsEtc during this two week period will be donated to Col. Potter.

Tricks & Treats for Col. Potter!

Contributed by CP's VP of Intakes

Tricks, a sweet 13.5 lb. Black Brindle Female

Treats, a tiny little 10.9 lb. Wheaten Female

It's Halloween -- the day that children can live their fantasy as super heroes, princesses, mythical creatures, or spooky spirits.  Your doorbell rings and you're not quite sure what to expect standing at your door yelling “Boo!” and demanding "Trick or Treat!"  You graciously and happily hand out treats to all comers, reminiscing back to your childhood and reflecting on special memories of Halloweens gone by.

Halloween came early for two Cairns this year.  These two little girls were passed over several months ago and didn't get that chance to live out their fantasy of life in Freedom.  But, this time when the Col. Potter doorbell rang, there were no tricks for them, only treats as they waited at the door.  This past weekend they got to don the costume of Cairn Princess - as that is surely what they will become!

Let's give a big Halloween greeting to:

Tricks - F, Black Brindle, 13.15 lb., a friendly girl who loves to give kisses!

…and of course

Treats - F, Wheaten, 10.9 lb., just a little sprite of a girl who is very sweet, but a little scared of her new frightful world.

We're waiting on our vet to give us an estimate of age for these girls.

Happy Halloween to all, but especially Tricks & Treats!

Adopting a Cairn with Heartworm Disease

Please Feel Free to Cross Post!

Why do dogs with heartworm disease often face death in a shelter?  Money.

Most shelters do not have the financial resources to treat a dog with heartworm disease, and potential adoptive homes face the same dilemma, therefore, unless a rescue group steps up to accept and treat the infected dog, it will be put to sleep, even if it is otherwise a healthy, wonderful little dog.

Thank you for helping to support our efforts to fund the critical treatment needed for rescued Cairns who have tested heartworm positive, and please help spread the word about the importance of prevention.

Mr. Petey & Miss Bessie Celebrate 2nd Gotcha Days!

Written by Petey fka CP Frisbee

Petey fka CP Frisbee and Bessie fka CP Besame

Hello there!  Petey here!  You knew me as CP Frisbee – a good name since I love to run and play – but Petey is a better name because my Mom and Dad picked it out for me!

I love to keep an eye on things…

Dad says I always have something to say, so I thought I would talk with my Col. Potter friends for a spell!  You know, I have been here with Mom and Dad for a Whole Two Years now!   Well, guess what?  Bessie – you knew her as CP Besame – she’s my sister and she will Also be here two whole years on November 27th!

…and I have lots of places to perch…
…even in the car!

Now, I love to talk and I make sure I have a nice conversation with Mom and Dad in the mornings and then again when Dad gets home from work, but Bessie does her share!  Mom and Dad call her “Wookie” because she talks like some Star Wars character – whatever that means!  What do we talk about?   Well, what don’t we talk about!   We have so many things that we might have seen on our walks or in the backyard, and then there are so many wonderful dreams to share in the morning!

Bessie likes to look from Mom’s arms!

Bessie was very shy when she first came here, preferring to stay in her crate all the time.  Well, Mom and Dad finally closed the crate when they were home and Bessie learned that it was not so bad to join me in the same room with Mom and Dad.  Now she will actually let Dad pick her up and hold her for a few minutes!

A major breakthrough occurred several weeks ago when she fell asleep on Dad’s lap and stayed there for nearly half an hour.  It seems like a small thing, but Mom and Dad were very happy when it happened!  She is also learning from me that begging for treats is a Good thing!  She is not hiding anymore when Mom and Dad have guests at the house, and she is happy snuggling with us all in the morning, up on the bed.  I am very proud of my sister Bessie, and really happy that she is getting bolder and developing her own sense of Cairnitude.  Makes play time all the better!

Of course, I am a real lover, more than anything.  My favorite activity (outside of eating) is giving kisses – and I would do it for hours on end if Mom and Dad let me!

OK!  Enough talking!  Let’s play!!!

Bessie and I want to thank everyone at Col. Potter for keeping us safe two years ago and helping us both find the best Mom and Dad ever – Forever!

Preventing Heartworm Disease

Please Feel Free to Cross Post!

What is the best way to keep your own sweet little Cairn girl or boy from getting heartworm disease?  A single monthly pill will do it.

HeartGuard, Iverhart Max, Canimax, and other veterinary-recommended preventative medications in tablet form are available to give your pet on a monthly or every-6-week basis, as a rule.  They may be chewable and you might get lucky and have a dog that will take it like a treat, but even if you have to wrap your little Toto in a towel and push the tablet to the back of the mouth, then stroke the throat with one hand while you hold the mouth closed, it is a great deal less costly and, without a doubt, less painful than having to treat your dog for that one infected mosquito bite.

Heartworm has been reported in all 50 states of the United States, so please check with a reliable vet for the best recommendations for your region, and don’t take a chance with your dog’s health and well-being.  Remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Please follow this link to the American Heartworm Society website to learn more about this awful disease, including prevention, and to see graphic photos of adult heartworms in a dog’s heart.

Understanding Heartworm Disease

Please Feel Free to Cross Post!

How does a sweet little Cairn girl like Aubrey get heartworm disease?  A single mosquito bite will do it.

An adult female heartworm, living in a host animal, will lay their eggs (microfilariae) in the animal’s bloodstream.  A mosquito, drawing blood from the same animal, will become infected with the microfilariae and, within two weeks’ time, these microfilariae mature into infective larvae, after which the mosquito will infect any dog, cat, or other vulnerable animal it bites, passing the infective larvae through the bite wound.  In six months, the worm will mature into an adult and can then live in a dog up to seven years.

Please follow this link to the American Heartworm Society website to learn more about this awful disease, including prevention, and to see graphic photos of adult heartworms in a dog’s heart.

Keeping Pets Safe on Halloween!

Information taken from Halloween Safety Guide, HSUS, Pet Safety on Halloween.
Zander is all set for a Safe Halloween!

Jack-o'-lanterns, trick-or-treaters, haunted houses and costume parties. Halloween is full of fun things for you and your family to enjoy, but it's one of those holidays that is enjoyed more by people than by pets.

Keep the following precautions in mind when preparing for the frightfully fun festivities and help ensure that everyone in your family—including your pet—has a safe Halloween.

  • As much as your dog or cat may beg for some of your Halloween candy, always remember that chocolate may be deadly to them even in small amounts.

  • Keep your pet in a quiet place, away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities. You may know that the miniature monsters and goblins who come knocking on Halloween aren't real, but pets don't. Dogs and cats are creatures of habit and could become frightened or agitated by the unaccustomed sights and sounds of costumed visitors. In addition, frequently opened doors provide a perfect opportunity for escape, which can go unnoticed during all the commotion. Be sure all pets are wearing collars and ID tags in case of an accidental getaway.

  • Dogs can have lethal tails, wagging all over the place. Don't leave any lighted candles or Jack-O-Lanterns where they could be knocked over by a swinging tail or by a curious cat. Not only could your pet start a fire but they could severely burn themselves in the process.

  • If you are having a indoor party, make sure that you put your dog or cat in a room where they won't be disturbed. Unless your pet is ultra friendly and doesn't mind loud noises, music and lots of people you should keep them separate for the night. Also, be careful your cat or dog doesn't dart out through the open door as you hand out candy. Best bet is to just put them in a crate with some food and water for the night and check on them once in a while to let them know everything is fine.

  • Candy wrappers, such as tin foil, can get stuck in your pets digestive tract and make them ill or cause death. There are plenty of recipes for making homemade dog and cat treats, you can always make them their own Halloween treats.

  • Don't let the family dog accompany the kids on their trick-or-treat outing. Children may have a difficult time handling a pet during the festivities and your pooch could get loose, especially if your dog is scared by the strange sights and sounds of trick-or-treaters.

  • Don't leave your pet outside on Halloween: There are plenty of stories of vicious pranksters who have teased, injured, stolen, even killed pets on this night. Plus with all the things happening that evening it can be more than a little frightening for our animals.

Col. Potter wishes everyone a Happy Halloween!

Beating Stage 3 Heartworm Positive

Please Feel Free to Cross Post!

Houston came into Col. Potter in early 2010 as part of a group of 28 Cairns called The City Slickers.  A handsome seven year old Black Brindle boy, Houston was determined to be was Stage 3 (severe), so his neuter and dental were postponed as he started treatment right away to stop any further progression of the disease.  He had a series of 3 Immiticide injections, following the course of medications and supplements, again with forced inactivity.  With Stages 4&5 (Critical) vets will try the Immiticide injections first, but then may have to revert to surgery to remove the worms, so Houston was lucky we were able to treat him when we did.

My mid June, Houston was declared heartworm free and was then able to have his neuter and dental, before settling down to the business of learning how to live in a home.  Seven years as a caged stud for a commercial breeder had not prepared him for dishwashers and carpets and such, but thanks to being cured of his potentially deadly condition, Houston had the opportunity to learn the finer points of Freedom, and he did eventually find his perfect Forever home!
